K

KOH treater

A piece of equipment in which alkylate is treated with potassium hydroxide (KOH) to remove any fluorides or traces of HF acid from the final product.

KT Card

An interface module that mounts inside a standard PC and allows the PC to communicate on Allen-Bradley's Data Highway networks

KVA rating

The volt-ampere output that a transformer can deliver at rated secondary voltage and rated frequency without exceeding its specified maximum temperature rise.

Kaolinite

Kaolinite is a clay mineral with the chemical composition Al2Si2O5(OH)4. It is a layered silicate mineral.

Kelly

A long square or hexagonal steel bar with a hole drilled through the middle, enabling a path for drilling mud to pass through and down the inside of the drill string. The kelly transmits clockwise rotary motion from the rotary table or kelly bushing to the drill string, while allowing the drill string to be lowered or raised during rotation.

Kelvin

A temperature scale with the zero point taken as the absolute zero, about -273°C.

Kerf

The width of material removed by a cutting process, such as the rock formation removed during core cutting, or the cut or channel made by a saw blade.

Kerogen

Kerogen is a mixture of organic chemical compounds that make up a portion of the organic matter in sedimentary rocks.

Kerosene fraction

The fraction whose carbon atoms range from C19 to C26, and have boiling points between 315°F and 450°F.

Kettle Reboiler

A type of natural circulation reboiler in which vapor and liquid are separated before leaving the reboiler

Kettle-type Reboiler

A type of reboiler in which the process vapour and liquid are separated before leaving the reboiler

Key

A non-threaded, rectangular piece of metal fastener that fits into a keyway to prevent parts such as gears, pulleys, or impellers from rotating on a shaft. In electronics, a small tab on a transistor case used for lead identification.

Keyway

A machined slot in a shaft or on a part such as a gear, pulley, or clutch that accepts a key.

Kilohertz

1000 hertz; a unit of frequency

Kilowatt (kW)

One thousand watts.

Kilowatt-Hour (kWh)

One thousand watt-hours.

Kinetic Energy

The energy of motion; work done by a force along a given displacement.

Kirchhoff's current law

A fundamental law of electricity stating that at any junction point in a circuit, the current arriving equals the current leaving. In parallel circuits, the sum of the branch currents equals the total current through the circuit.

Kirchhoff's voltage law

Kirchhoff's voltage law states that the relationship between the voltage drops around any closed loop in a circuit and the voltage sources in that loop. The total of these two quantities is always equal.

Kirchoff's Current Law

A fundamental law of electricity that applies to parallel circuits. It states that the sum of the branch currents in a parallel bank equals the total current through the circuit.

Klinkenberg Gas Slippage Effect

Klinkenberg found that the permeability of a core sample was not constant, but varied with the gas used to make the measurement as well as with the mean pressure existing in the core at the time of measurement. His investigations indicated that at low mean pressures, the gas molecules are so far apart that they slip through the pore spaces with little friction loss and generate a higher value of permeability.

Knock

A sharp metallic noise that results from uncontrolled or premature combustion within a cylinder of an engine.

Knockout drum

A separation vessel or device that removes condensed liquid from a vapor stream, often using a demister pad. Also called a knockout pot.

Knotted Tap Joint

A tap joint that includes a knot and is used if the splice is subject to strain or slippage

Knowledge-based Information

Information consisting of concepts, theory, and fundamentals of a job; usually taught more effectively in a classroom than through on-the-job training (OJT).

keystone structure

A wedge-shaped fault block at the apex of a faulted anticline is called a keystone structure.

kicks off

An intentional deviation of a vertical well into a directional path.

kinematic

Kinematics is a branch of mechanics involved with how objects move without focusing on what caused the objects to move.
