This course lists the seven specific facies factors that can directly influence the quality of a hydrocarbon reservoir. It defines the major components of Dott’s Sandstone Classification scheme, and Folk’s and Dunham’s Carbonate Classification Systems, which are used to classify sedimentary rocks. The prominent facies characteristics of alluvial fans, braided streams, meandering stream channels, aeolian dunes, lacustrine environments, deltas, mouth bars, barrier islands, and continental and deep-sea sands are detailed and their significance in oil and gas exploration is explained. Carbonate rock formation processes and their different grain types are addressed. The most common carbonate depositional structures of the carbonate shelf, coastal, margin and basinal settings are detailed and their importance in oil and gas exploration is listed. Relevant diagnostic evidence, in the form of cores, logs and seismic, of sandstone and carbonate facies is presented.
