This course lists the different types of sedimentary basins and explains their tectonic origins. How a sedimentary basin’s type can affect the quantity of hydrocarbons it produces is described. The sediment sequence and petroleum characteristics typical of many interior and foreland basins are discussed. The geologic settings of most of the world’s convergent margin basins are explained. Typical characteristics of collision basins and where they are found are described. The geologic characteristics of open downwarp basins and deltas are outlined.
