Emerging Leaders Program

IHRDC’s Emerging Leaders Program provides those individuals, who are targeted for or who aspire to become leaders, with an integrated and practical understanding of key leadership skills, with an oil and gas industry perspective. A competency based approach is used to structure the program components, which includes weekly mentor presentations, e-Learning assignments, discussion of case studies, guidance and interaction with the Mentor as well as fellow participants. There will be a pre and post assessment exercise that will produce a graphic result for measuring the learning achieved from the program.

Target Audience

Energy industry managers, supervisors and key employees from broad functional areas, such as administration, operations, finance, technology and project development who are targeted for or aspire to become leaders and wish to gain a solid foundation in leadership skills and their application with a focus on the oil and gas Industry.


3 hours self-study and 2 hour online virtual mentored session per week for seven continuous weeks.

Program Content

Week One

Introduction to Leadership

Introduction: What is Leadership
This session steps beyond the traditional leadership styles and techniques and challenges the participants to identify their individual talents and the leader within. It steps into the psychology of what it takes to be a successful leader in today’s business world and discusses how each person can evaluate their own individual skills and traits to determine their personal leadership stiles and paths on your way to a successful career. We use real life scenarios and examples of today’s leaders to evaluate how those successes/failures impacted their individual careers and futures.

Week Two

Communicating Collaboratively

Communication for Leaders
This session is designed to help leaders improve their impact, performance and effectiveness as communicators. It equips you with the tools, techniques and skills to build your communication capacity at all levels – whether it be interpersonal, organizational or external, and enable you to become a leader communicator who connects and resonates with any stakeholders.

Week Three

Emotional Intelligence for Project Managers

Emotional Intelligence
This session is useful for anyone who leads or works with other people, no matter what size the organization. Its focus is on the five core competencies of emotional intelligence: self-management, self-awareness, self-regulation, self-motivation and empathy.

Week Four

Personal Excellence/Self Awareness
This session is designed for managers and emerging leaders who wish to increase their self-awareness and improve the way they relate to others in order to work more effectively and to sustain high quality working relationships. Sessions Include: Identify your Career Passion; Identify your Strengths and areas for Development; Verbal Communication Skills; Non-Verbal Communication Skills; Moving the Conversation Along; The Power of your Subconscious mind in Communication; Bringing People to Your Side; Sharing Your Opinion Constructively.

Week Five

Introduction to Critical Thinking

Creative Thinking and Problem Solving
This session is designed to teach participants how to apply logical and creative approaches to solving problems and making decisions; how to use traditional and creative tools for identifying causes and generating solutions; how to employ creativity and lateral thinking as business tools and, finally, how to analyze and solve actual problems facing them at work.

Week Six

Leading and Managing Change

Leading Change Management
This session focuses on the crucial role leaders have in effectively leading change initiatives in the workplace. Leaders learn how to introduce a change initiative and lead discussions with employees to explore how best to implement the changes. In addition, they learn how to help others overcome their resistance to changes.
