This course explains the purposes of geodynamic modeling, explaining how these models assist with determining the tectonic setting and history of a basin. It discusses the different types of cooling models and their thermal boundary conditions. The course describes how the backstripping method uses stratigraphic data to separate subsidence caused by sediment and water loads from that caused by tectonic processes. It explains how quantitative dynamic stratigraphy is used and details its advantages. Two general categories of quantitative models are defined. The four basic units of the petroleum-generating system are identified. Models designed to determine the amount and composition of hydrocarbons that may migrate within a gaseous solution are identified.
