This course explains how geologic anomalies are identified and the criteria for designating them as leads and prospects. The primary error in the conventional interpretation of seismic velocity is identified. The distinct rock classifications of a petroleum system are outlined and how these contribute to a viable prospect are explained. Factors that can lead to unreliable subsurface maps are described. The five essential components for petroleum accumulation are defined. Diagnostic tools that are helpful in frontier province exploration are listed. The purpose of geophysical reconnaissance surveys is explained.
